God’s Authority is Self-Attesting

God is the ultimate authority. When people want justification for their actions or beliefs, they will have to appeal to some kind of authority. For non-Christians, they will try to appeal to their senses, but then they use their senses to validate their senses…a vicious circle.

For Christians, we appeal to the Creator as our authority. Romans 1 tells us that the God of Creation has revealed himself so that none are without excuse.

The author of this blog  entry uses a pretty good analogy…even though he says, it’s not a very good analogy.

“It’s not a great analogy, but think of parents dealing with their children. The child keeps asking “Why?, Why? Why?, and finally the parents say “Because I said so”. And now it’s become a test of parent’s authority. The child asks “Well, why do you have authority?”, and the parent replies “My authority is my authority, and I don’t have to justify it to you.” If a parent doesn’t have to justify him/herself to their child, does God? If He did, who would He appeal to to authorize His authority? Would he look beyond Himself? If He did, would He still be God?”

(A) 1.) A very simple and practical question to keep in mind that you can ask whenever you’re debating someone about worldviews is…

“By what authority do  you say this?”
“By what authority do you assert that?”
“By what authority should I believe what you’re telling me?”

2.) Let’s say an unbeliever claims that he believes it’s alright for him to engage in premarital sexual intercouse. I’m going to want to find from him how he made that ethical judgment, how he came to that conclusion. So I ask him “By what authority do you say that?”, and I tell him that the Bible condemns it in “this passage” and “that passage” and so on. One way or another I think this will lead him to say either (1) that there is no God, or (2) the Bible is not the Word of God. In defense of his ethical point…

It Only Takes One Generation

I Kings 12-14 records the steep decline of morality among God’s chosen people once King Solomon died. It was a sad time for Israel and led to their eventual destruction for breaking God’s covenant. In a single generation the chosen people of Almighty God rejected his covenant, blessing, and protection for worldliness, wickedness, and unfaithfulness.

America is NOT God’s chosen people, and it could be debated that the government of the United States has ever been Christian in nature, but the culture of the American people has been strongly influenced by the Bible and Christian morality. For generations the vast majority of Americans would have declared themselves to be Christian. Even today, polls show that about 70% of Americans identify as Christians.

The numbers continue to fall, and over this next generation, the numbers will fall precipitously. I would propose that the single biggest factor in this decline is the prominence that has been granted to evolution. The grand theory of evolution is a naturalistic origins story that purportedly replaces the Creator, and as evolution has been taught as the only viable origins story in all public schools for the past 60 years, it’s no small wonder that today’s youth find no need for the Bible or a Redeemer. Sadly, many people who claim to be Christians endorse this naturalistic tool without realizing the way it dismantles people’s faith.

Today’s article from the Slate identifies evolution as a primary reason for the decline and fall of Christianity in America:

The increase in younger people embracing evolution is “quite striking,” says Kenneth R. Miller, a biologist at Brown University and an expert witness the landmark court case Kitzmiller v. Dover, which kicked “intelligent design” out of public school classrooms in 2005. “We’re moving in the right direction.”

Evolution has been used as a bludgeon to beat down belief in the Creator. Youth and adults alike fear the stigma of being identified with creationists if they are not worshiping at the altar of St. Darwin.

Sadly, as Darwinism extends its iron grip on the American culture, certain side effects are inevitable. From the same article:

To turn that cultural tide in such a short period of time, the supporters of gay marriage had to do something far more difficult: change deeply rooted attitudes and beliefs. Similarly, for the movement behind evolution to triumph, younger Americans who have been raised to believe in creationism need to be open to changing their minds. Fortunately, today’s generation is growing up in a time of greater open-mindedness and willingness to listen to evidence-based thinking, Wolfson says. Rather than being blinded by ideology, today’s young adults are open to evidence, facts, and reason.

The author hypocritically or ignorantly attributes ideology to Christianity without showing how evolutionary ideology is tyrannical in its extreme prejudice.

Romans 1 (I’ve included the text at the end) speaks clearly of this cascade of steps in which wicked people engage:

  • They suppress the Truth of God as Creator
  • Instead of thanking and glorifying God, they claim to be wise
  • This causes futile thinking and darkened hearts
  • They attribute God’s creative works instead to created things (evolution did it)
  • Therefore, sexual impurity becomes rampant and accepted

If anyone ever wondered before about the strength and prophetic power of scripture, reading Romans 1 erases doubt that the Spirit revealed to Paul how quickly a culture could be sabotaged from the inside. The Roman culture quickly crumbled once immorality became acceptable. We’re seeing the same thing in our American culture today.

Where’s the hope? Hope is in Christ alone. Our culture like every other culture that has thought it would last forever will end up in the landfill. But as Deuteronomy 6 stresses, “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.”

It only takes one generation that unlike their parents, rejects God’s commands, and the culture will be irrevocably changed.

The only hope for cultures, ourselves, and our children is in the redemption that only Christ can bring. Avoid the cascade of Romans 1 by first of all giving thanks to God as Creator. Don’t let evolution corrode your faith in his creative and redemptive works.

Romans 1

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.20 Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse; 21 for although they knew God they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error.

That’s fine for you, but

Moral relativism. The idea that everyone determines their own standards of morality. Is it cogent or absurd?

  • Relativists Can’t Accuse Others of Wrong-Doing
  • Relativists Can’t Complain About the Problem of Evil
  • Relativists Can’t Place Blame or Accept Praise
  • Relativists Can’t Claim Anything Is Unfair or Unjust
  • Relativists Can’t Improve Their Morality
  • Relativists Can’t Hold Meaningful Moral Discussions
  • Relativists Can’t Promote the Obligation of Tolerance

Why or why not could a moral relativist be able to handle the above scenarios?

When viewing reality through a Christian worldview, these things make sense. We can make comparisons and analyze the just nature of actions. The problem of evil makes sense, and since Jesus paid the penalty for our evil behavior, there is forgiveness and life.

Repressing The Truth Leads to Evil

God doesn’t believe in atheists. In fact, he tells us in Romans 1 that everyone has enough information to face judgement for their actions.

As Romans 1 continues, it talks about those who repress the truth of God’s revelation. Those who repress the truth exhibit all kinds of evil without recognizing it as evil. So, much so, that the evil begins to be praised. And that’s exactly what we see in today’s headlines. Evil is being honored as good.

Only in a Christian worldview, can we have a recognize that evil exists, and only in a Christian worldview can we find hope in Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins. We ALL deserve eternal punishment for our rebellion against the Creator (not just the abortion providers.) We ALL have revelation from God through the creation around us. We ALL have a chance to repent of our sins and turn to Christ for forgiveness.

Foundation

I don’t particularly like to post politically-themed articles on this blog, but I’m going to make an exception for this one, because it goes well with the idea that to build a strong apologetic, we have to have a solid foundation.

As Christians, our foundation is the immortal, life-giving Word (revealed in Jesus and his written Word). If we start with the coherence of God’s Word throughout eternity, then our discussions will be filled with light and life in a dark world.

In last night’s Republican Presidential Debate, the candidates bickered and squawked over trivial slights and only a few legitimate talking points. The Constitution was mentioned in abstract, but ALL candidates missed opportunities to turn everyone’s attention back to a proper foundation of understanding political discussion in light of the Constitution. That should be their foundation instead of personal likes/dislikes.

This blog post says it very clearly.

Missed opportunity #1 – When the discussion about illegal immigration was being discussed, Donald Trump said, “A woman gets pregnant. She’s nine months, she walks across the border, she has the baby in the United States, and we take care of the baby for 85 years. I don’t think so.” Either Ted Cruz or Rand Paul should have cut him off with a sharp rebuke. IT’s NOT THE GOVERNMENT’S JOB TO CARE FOR ANYONE!!!!!

Missed Opportunity #2 – When the conversation turned to abortion, the moderators phrased the question, “Governor Kasich, Senator Cruz is so committed to stripping federal funds from Planned Parenthood that it could result in shutting down the federal government in just about two weeks. Do you agree with Senator Cruz’s tactic?”

EACH and every candidate who spoke on this issue missed the opportunity to say, “Mr. moderator, you misunderstand the situation. It’s the job of the Senate to propose a budget. If Congress deems it unnecessary to fund murderers and felons (selling fetal tissue for profit is a felony), and the President decides that he would rather shut down the government than sign a budget that doesn’t fund his supporters, then the President is shutting down the government.

Made Me Smile

This post is a little out of the ordinary from what I usually post, but I thought it was too funny not to pass along.

This is an actual screen shot from my phone as I was updating the Yahoo Fantasy app from the app store.

UpdateYahooApp

RGIII no longer supported!

I suppose I can kinda’ make it work as Biblical Authority post since we know that the Native American team from Washington is not supported by Christ followers.

Pure Evil

Our culture has become increasingly desensitized to the blatant disregard for God’s Eternal Word. As things have progressed more and more towards the Progressive utopia, we are seeing civilization celebrate the perversion of God’s creation.

This week, in the news it was revealed that one of history’s most effective murdering agents is now in the business of selling human body parts.

At the end of the blog post is a call to action. Please consider doing your part in helping to stop Planned Parenthood.

Please note, that politics cannot save us; It is only through accepting the redemptive work of Jesus by repentance from sin will individuals and nations be saved.

Jurassic Nightmare

Who has seen Jurassic World? I’m anxious to see it as I was a huge fan of the original Jurassic Park from 1993. The idea is that scientists were able to clone dinosaurs from dino DNA that was retrieved from amber-trapped blood parasites. Great story, but it is built upon a foundation of irrationality.

The dominant paradigm of billions of years of evolution acting on genetic code to form all terrestrial life from a single cell ancestor is completely at odds with the historical account of the Bible. It is said in this dominant paradigm of scientism that the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago.

The problem for this epic fairy tale is that the dates are wrong. The bards of this epic fantasy tell us that radioactive dating has proven that the fossil material recovered in archaeological digs is absolutely dated as older than 65 million years. The problem is that they have disregarded one of the Creationist’s best friend, Carbon-14 testing.

This article shows how the story of evolution is coming apart.

The CRSQ study authors tested seven dinosaur bones, including a Triceratops from Montana, hadrosaurids, a cartilaginous paddlefish, a bony fish, and fresh-looking wood and lizard bones from Permian layers in Canada and Oklahoma. Five different commercial and academic laboratories detected carbon-14 in all the samples, whether from Cenozoic, Mesozoic, or Paleozoic source rocks.

carbon14_Dinosaur

Evolutionists are left with the choice that either radiometric dating is untrustworthy because ALL fossils have carbon-14 (and therefore, they cannot prove that fossils existed millions of years ago) or carbon-14 is a reliable dating method (and therefore since all fossils have carbon-14, then not enough time has passed to validate their fantastic tale.)

It’s a nightmare for old earthers like Hugh Ross and evolutionists.

But all of these dates verify the historicity of the Bible. At every point, we find that God’s Word can be trusted. We find that since we can trust God about his revelation of history, we can trust Him in his prophecy about our future.

Why Scientism is Untrustworthy

What is scientism? From a simple Google search:

Scientism is belief in the universal applicability of the scientific method and approach, and the view that empirical science constitutes the most authoritative worldview or most valuable part of human learning to the exclusion of other viewpoints.

The call by many atheists to discard history/religion/common sense and embrace scientism has some problems. One of the biggest problems with scientism is the predictions that are made. Here’s just a few examples.

So, let’s take a look at some of his predictions, made in 1968:

1) “The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. At this late date nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate,” he said. He predicted four billion deaths, including 65 million Americans…

What actually happened: Since Ehrlich wrote, the population has more than doubled to seven billion — but the amount of food per head has gone up by more than 25 per cent. Of course there are famines, but the death rate has gone down. I don’t think a significant number of Americans have starved….

3) “By the year 2000 the United Kingdom will be simply a small group of impoverished islands, inhabited by some 70 million hungry people … If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.”

What actually happened: I’m not hungry. I just ate. Are you hungry? Were you hungry in 2000, especially? Does England exist?

So, what is a reasonable alternative to scientism? Well, if you’re looking for a worldview that has been faithful to historical trustworthiness, religion, and common sense, check into Christianity…not into joining a religious club but truly letting Jesus guide your life. The prophecies contained in the Bible (as opposed to scientism) have been 100% accurate.

Have people (even popes) misrepresented Christianity for selfish or even wicked purposes? Most assuredly. Does it then follow that because people have rationalized bad behavior in the name Jesus, that Christianity should be discarded? You might have even been on the receiving end of poor choices by Christians, but please let me encourage you to test a person’s actions on their alignment with the Bible. There is forgiveness through Jesus, and only in Him can we find hope for the future.

Apolgetics Done Right

This is my first exposure to Michael Ramsden. After watching this video, I am very impressed. If you have 45 minutes, I would highly recommend this video as an classroom session on helping someone understand their need for Christ.

His easy conversational tone in leading someone to their own realization of a need for Christ is highly compelling.

Listening to people and knowing that the Light will always overcome the darkness brings in the harvest for the Kingdom.

After watching this video, I searched and found several articles from Mr. Ramsden on BeThinking.org.

Enjoy!
